Cry of the Babe

from A Little Bit of Christmas by Cathy McManamon

/

about

Written last-minute for midnight mass one Christmas in the early 1990s when I was the Choir Director at St. Ferdinand Church in Chicago. I finished scribbling the lyrics and chords just before the pre-mass choir warmups. This was finally recorded in December 2018 and I am pleased to have polished it up a bit for this mini-album.

lyrics

The mountains have all been laid low
And the valleys have been raised
Are we really ready for him?
For the one who comes to save?
Will we hear the cry of the babe?

The people see a light through the dark
The Light of the World is coming for us
But will we greet him with joy -
This, our King, just a baby boy?
Will we follow the cry of the babe?
Will we follow the cry of the babe?
Can we hear the cry of the babe?

(Oh, holy night, the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of the dear Savior's birth...)

Lord Jesus, we wait for your coming with open hearts
We look to the East and follow your star
We have so little to bring
To honor our newborn king
But we follow the cry of the babe?
Yes we follow the cry of the babe?
Can you hear the cry of the babe?
We must follow the cry of the babe!
