Out of the mouths of babes...a six-year-old presented me with these lyrics in 1993 and asked me if they could possibly be a song. I tweaked a few lines and phrases and added music, and nearly 30 years later it's still a relevant message.

In my dreams I hear your people cry
In my waking hours I close my eyes
Throw away the paper, turn off the TV
Can't listen anymore and I don't want to see
I always end up thinking it was me

We pass the basket 'round 'cause it makes us feel good
Fools us into thinking we're doing what we should
It's only the beginning and nowhere near the end
Instead of passing paper we should lend a helping hand
I guess it's up to me to take a stand

A homeless woman passes me as I walk down the street
I bet the wind blows through the holey shoes on her feet
